China Headhunter SunTzu Recruit has learned from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) that the 53rd Statistical Report on China’s Internet Development (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”) shows that as of December 2023, the number of internet users in China has reached 1.092 billion, an increase of 24.8 million users compared to December 2022, with an internet penetration rate of 77.5%.
The Report states that relevant data indicate that China’s overall economic recovery continues to consolidate, and the internet plays an important role in accelerating the advancement of new industrialization, developing new productive forces, and assisting economic and social development, especially in unleashing new consumption potential.
The Report specifically points out that consumption in cultural and entertainment tourism is accelerating recovery. Cultural and entertainment tourism, characterized by immersive tourism and cultural tourism, is becoming a new growth point for consumption cultivated by various regions. As of December, the number of users booking travel online reached 509 million, an increase of 86.29 million compared to December 2022, a growth rate of 20.4%.
The Report also notes that domestic “trendy” products are leading a new fashion trend in consumption. These trendy products have become a significant component of online shopping for residents. In the past six months, 58.3% of users have purchased trendy domestic products online; 19.7% have bought new categories of products or brand premieres.
Zhang Xiao, Deputy Director of the China Internet Network Information Center, stated that the number of tourists and tourism revenue during major holidays have exceeded the same period in 2019, significantly boosting the performance of online travel booking platforms. The healthy development trend of online food delivery applications continues, with user numbers further increasing and expanding to small and medium-sized cities and county areas.
The Report also shows that China’s network infrastructure resources are continuously being optimized. As of December 2023, the number of IPv6 addresses was 68,042/32; the number of national top-level domain names “.CN” was 20.13 million; the number of internet broadband access ports reached 1.136 billion. As of December 2023, China had built a total of 3.377 million 5G base stations, covering all prefecture-level city urban areas and county urban areas; developed 2.332 billion cellular IoT terminal users, a net increase of 488 million compared to December 2022, accounting for 57.5% of mobile network terminal connections.
The Report states that the “dual gigabit” network, composed of 5G and gigabit optical networks, fully promotes innovation and development in various fields such as smart manufacturing, smart cities, rural revitalization, and cultural tourism, providing a solid foundation and strong support for building a strong manufacturing nation, a strong cyber nation, and a digital China.
